Advanced EMDR Workshops: Working with Complex PTSD (ICD-11)

A four-part online workshop series for EMDR-trained practitioners

Develop your knowledge, confidence and clinical skills for working with clients presenting with complex PTSD (CPTSD). Across four workshops, we will explore ICD-11 CPTSD, EMDR case conceptualisation, challenges that may arise across the eight phases, and practical ways to adapt preparation, pacing and processing to the client’s needs.

The series combines teaching with case discussion, practical skills work and time for questions. It is designed to help you apply the learning thoughtfully in your own clinical practice.

Workshop dates

  • Wednesday 14 April 2027, 9:15am–12:45pm

  • Wednesday 28 April 2027, 9:15am–12:45pm

  • Wednesday 12 May 2027, 9:00am–12:00pm

  • Wednesday 2 June 2027, 9:15am–12:45pm

The series provides 12 hours of teaching across four workshops.

Who should attend?

This series is for practitioners who have completed EMDR basic training, including EMDR-accredited practitioners and consultants.

What you will learn

By the end of the series, you will be better able to:

  • Describe the ICD-11 features of CPTSD and distinguish them from PTSD, while recognising that a diagnosis alone does not determine an individual client’s needs or readiness for EMDR.

  • Develop an EMDR case conceptualisation linking current difficulties, relevant experiences, treatment priorities, client strengths, resources and goals.

  • Identify possible challenges to engagement and processing across the eight phases, including difficulties related to affect regulation, dissociation, shame, negative self-concept and relationships.

  • Select and explain appropriate adaptations to preparation, pacing, target selection and processing, and consider how to monitor the client’s response.

  • Use practical strategies to support clients who experience heightened distress or find it difficult to remain engaged, and recognise when to pause, reassess or seek consultation.

  • Apply your learning to a clinical example and explain the rationale for your proposed EMDR approach.

Workshop format

Online teaching will include presentations, group case discussion and Q&A. You will receive the workshop materials in advance. Handouts can be provided in larger text, and the sessions will be recorded for participants to review afterwards.

The teaching will consider how trauma, disability, neurodivergence, culture, language, gender, sexuality, age and socioeconomic circumstances may shape a client’s access to therapy and experience of treatment. We will encourage flexible, culturally responsive and collaborative practice that supports informed choice, dignity and client autonomy.
